The sounds of paddles pop and echo across the room like a pack of firecrackers. Hands poised in loose fists, eyes narrowed in fierce concentration, 15 warriors move with each other beneath fluorescent light in a room lined with blue foam. The traditional war whoop of taekwondo, ki’ap, helps focus the mind, flex the core, and summon the fighting spirit.
On this Friday night in December, HC Taekwondo Pearland’s competition team, is shouting ki’ap and practicing kyorugi, or sparring, in preparation for their first tournament since the COVID pandemic.
This particular practice is critical: as it is the last practice before the tournament set for Saturday, December 12th. This will be the first time taking the mat for some as the team goes in tomorrow with five newcomers and 10 veterans. Led by leaders Jasmine and Jaden Nem and Alfonso Armendariz, the team hopes to bring home 15 gold medals!
Let’s go team!!!
